Women have the luxury of choosing whatever jewelry they want to wear. Men? Not so much. The only acceptable jewelry that a man can wear is a watch and that’s about it.
Men’s watches are aplenty in the market and one would definitely have a hard time choosing the right timepiece for them.
So in this article, I will go about the things that you need to consider when picking a watch.
Look at the Watch Movements
When browsing different watches in the market, you might find that the watch movement is typically shown as part of the watch’s features. That is because a watch movement is basically how the watch operates and the inner mechanism that is powered to make it function.
There are three different popular watch movements today. The first one is the mechanical watch and it got its name because of the fact that it is powered by a mainspring- a long metal coiled wire that gives power to the inner mechanism of the timepiece. The mainspring would have to be manually winded to give power to the watch and it should be done a couple of times a week depending on the length of the said spring.
An automatic watch is basically a mechanical watch with the exclusion of consistently winding the watch. Instead, you only have to wound the watch once and let its rotor do the winding for you. Assuming that you always wear your watch, it should have enough power so that you don’t have to wind it again. You will have to invest in a watch winder if you have plenty of different automatic watches to keep them powered.
A quartz watch is the cheapest of the bunch and unlike the previous two, it is powered by a battery. As the battery sends energy, its mechanism converts that energy into pulses which then powers the mechanism. Because of the conversion process, the watch moves in a tick-tock fashion and is not in a sweeping motion like in a mechanical or automatic watch.
Consider the Style
There are different watches for different occasions and although you can technically wear whatever watch you want, there is a certain code where you should wear the appropriate one based on the occasion.
A dress watch is a simple watch that uses a leather strap. It is meant to complement the suit that you are wearing and is ideal for formal events.
A field watch used to be a watch utilized by the military, but is now in mass production for everyone to use. This is more of a rugged watch and uses a NATO or fabric strap
A smartwatch is a relatively new timepiece that connects to your smartphone or tablet to provide meaningful information to the user. All smartwatches have digital displays.
Watchband
You also have to look at the strap that the watch uses. A metal watchband is heavy but it can actually look good for a watch that can be used no matter what the occasion is.
A leather strap is also ideal for formal events simply because it looks sleek and stylish and would typically not ‘pop out’ than other straps.
A NATO or fabric strap is definitely only used for casual events. The field watch I’ve mentioned earlier uses a NATO strap simply because it is rugged and can be washed at any time.
